As atividades do Programa de Engenharia Nuclear foram iniciadas em 1968, com a implantação do Curso de Mestrado tendo formado, até o presente, mais de 575 mestres em Engenharia Nuclear e possuindo o Conceito 6 da CAPES.
As atividades de ensino, pesquisa e desenvolvimento de projetos são agrupadas nas cinco áreas relacionadas, a seguir: Física de Reatores, Física Nuclear Aplicada, Engenharia de Reatores, Análise de Segurança e Engenharia de Fatores Humanos.
